Government officials have been arrested by police in Kaberamaido district following theft of government mosquito nets that are being distributed by the ministry of health.
The officials allegedly stole one bale of mosquito nets containing 40 pieces. The bale was discovered missing from the 93 that had been delivered by the ministry to Kaberamaido town council.
Fred Enanga the police spokesperson identified the suspects as Ayama James the town clerk, Elagu Simon an office attendant, Onyu Jacob the town council Health inspector and Oduma Johnie a watchman.
The suspects are currently being processed under Kaberamaido Police station.
“This sabotages the ministry of health program in the fight against malaria and contravenes the professional ethics of the government employee” Enanga said.
On June 17th, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of health Dr Diana Asimwe flagged off mosquito distribution campaign dubbed “Under the Net”. The campaign targets districts with the highest Malaria prevalence and districts that have recently been affected by floods.
The targeted districts are; Kaberamaido, Alebtong, Dokolo, Butebo, Kapchorwa, Kibuku, Kalaki, Kween, Lira, Mbale and Namisindwa among others.
The distribution of nets is done door to door with teams wearing Persona; Protective Equipment, in line with the Ministry of health COVID-19 guidelines.
