Police is investigating circumstances under which a supporter of Kyadondo East MP Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, was allegedly knocked dead by police around Mabira as the MP returned from Jinja on Sunday.
Kyagulanyi wrote on his facebook that they received massive support in Jinja, but their celebration was cut short when he allegedly watched with as a military truck knocked dead an ardent supporter identified as Charles Mutyabule.
Bobi says that unlike in the past where such cases went unsolved due to lack of evidence, in this case the events were captured on camera.
“The Museveni regime has proven from time to time that it is ready to kill our people as if they are flies. What I can say is that a time will come when we shall get justice and accountability for all these atrocities. As we stand with the family of the deceased comrade, may we never tire to struggle until our country is free. Rest well soldier. Your blood is not shed in vain- we shall soldier on” he wrote.
However, police spokesperson Fred Enanga told the press in Kampala on Monday morning, that they received reports of Mutyabule’s death and that they are trying to establish if indeed, he was knocked by a police double cabin vehicle in a hit and run.
“Yesterday there was an incident that occurred at Mabira when Hon Kyagulanyi was returning from Jinja. They claimed that one of their supporters was hit by a police double cabin pickup. This incident is being investigated as a serious hit and run” Enanga says.
The victim was riding on a motorcycle Bajaj boxer blue in color Reg.No UDR 569K, while the killer car is yet to be identified.
According to Enanga, the accident happened at around 1pm in mabira along the Kampala-Jinja highway. He adds that the 23 year old Mutyabule was a resident of Wairakha in Jinja.
Tubusibwa Geoffrey, a brother to the deceased told police that the deceased was traveling to lugazi where he was supposed to pick money that he had requested from his brother. But that at around Mabira, he was knocked by an unidentified vehicle and was rushed to Kawolo hospital where he died shortly after arrival. Enanga says postmortem was done and the body was handed over to relatives for burial.
According to the deceased’s brother, Mutyabule was not a supporter of any political party as alleged by Bobi Wine that he was a people power die-hard.
“We don’t want to take this as a political matter. We are aware a number of parties usually come out to glorify death and gain political points out of that. We need to give respect to the dead. This is an incident which happened as a hit and run and is being investigated” Enanga said.
He promised that the police will release a full report on the matter.
