Authorities in Lwengo have launched a manhunt for unknown gunmen who shot and killed a 70-year-old woman and injured another man during a mobile money heist.
The deceased is Aidah Nabwami who was shot on Sunday night at around on 9pm at Sseke village, Busubi parish in Kinoni town council. The thugs allegedly made off with five million shillings and two mobile phones.
Nabwami was shot in the chest and died shortly after reaching the hospital while a mobile money operator who was nearby, a one Asadi Jjemba is admitted at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition.
According to Muhammad Nsubuga, the Southern Police spokesman, two thugs stormed the mobile money shop on a motorcycle with one of them donning a police uniform.
Eyewitnesses told police that they could not copy the registration number in the cover of darkness and that the duo entered the shop and shot Jjemba whom they ordered to hand over the money.
In the process, Nabwami came out of the bar to see what was happening and the thug shot her. Jjemba says that the thugs shot him in the presence of his wife whom they forced to reveal the pin number of a phone they use for transactions.
The nursing officer in charge of emergency Hellen Anek says Nabwami bled profusely and that she arrived late at the hospital when they could not save her life.
Nsubuga says investigations into the matter have kicked off and that they are doing whatever they can to track the thugs
