Government has warned schools heads against charging parents any amount of money, beyond the official registration fees set by the Uganda Examination Board (UNEB).
This follows resumption of candidate classes, and the announcement by the Uganda Examination Board (UNEB) of the start of the registration for PLE, UCE and UACE.
A statement from UENB indicates that PLE candidates will pay 34,000, UCE 164,000 and UACE 186,000 as registration fees, respectively.
According to Judith Nabakooba the Minister for ICT, there have been cases where schools have collected the money from parents but failed to register the candidates on time in the past years, and this must not be repeated, especially due to the pandemic that has left many parents broke and unable to sustain families.
“Parents are being called upon to be vigilant and liaise with their schools and ensure that the entire process is being done in a genuine manner” the minister said.
She further reminded the country, that COVID-19 is here and it kills.
Currently Uganda has so far lost close to 101 people to COVID-19, and Nabakooba says there is need to take seriously the guidance on prevention.
“Let us keep our masks on all the time when in public especially during this campaign period. Government is continuing with its efforts in ensuring that everyone is able to get the necessary services regarding the testing and treatment of COVID-19” she noted.
With resumption of schools, some institutions have turned away students who had not fully paid the first term school fees prior to the lockdown. This has forced parents to shift candidates to government schools or those that charge relatively fair fees.
