At least 140 members of the National Unity Platform Party –NUP have defected to the ruling NRM party, promising to ensure a massive win for President Museveni in Nwoya district.
The group defected Saturday in Anaka Town Council, Nwoya district, led by Bosco Ocitti Lawino, the former Coordinator and Registrar of NUP in the area.
On the fateful day, Ocitti surrendered his appointment letter as the coordinator and Registrar of NUP in Nwoya and a registration book which contains 11,000 names of NUP members in the district.
Also, defectors handed over NUP T-Shirts and in exchange for their new party NRM’s yellow T-Shirts.
According to Ocitti, he and the other new converts will start serious mobilization for President Museveni so that he sweeps all the votes in Nwoya against NUP’s Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi who they initially supported.
When asked why they defected, Ocitii said NUP’s top leadership lost track and began running the party as tricksters, something that is contrary to what they first believed in when it was still ‘The People Power Pressure Group”.
They have since been disowned by the NUP Northern Region Spokesperson Caesar Lubangakene, who claims all defectors were not members of the NUP party but masqueraders and opportunists who are soliciting for money from the NRM party using NUP’s identity.
