Police in Kampala Metropolitan North have on Monday thwarted an attempt by the former Forum for Democratic President Dr Kizza Besigye to stage a protest against the high commodity prices.
This is the third time Besigye’s move to hold demonstrations has been frustrated by the police, having been put under house arrest a few weeks ago.
Besigye who was in the company of his fellow former presidential candidate Samuel Walter Lubega Mukaaku was intercepted on his way to Kampala capital city centre.
The former Presidential candidate told journalists that he will continue with the protests to wake up Ugandans to compel the government to address the high commodity prices since president Yoweri Museveni failed to provide solutions during his Sunday night address.
The police had blocked the road to his residence and did not allow him to go far.
Besigye remained seated in his car for minutes as the police looked on unbothered. This prompted him to open the roof of his vehicle and inquire why the officers had blocked him.
"This is my private property. Kindly remove your vehicle I have some business to carry out in town. If you want to block roads, go and block the government road,” he told the police.
At least an hour later, Besigye got out of his vehicle insisting that he has a right of movement and vowed to move on foot. However, police officers grabbed and placed him in a van that they had used to block the route to his residence.
Luke Owoyesigyire the PRO KMP insists Besigye is not under arrest.
