The Alliance for National Transformation party candidate for the Omoro County parliamentary seat Oscar Kizza has dragged the electoral commission to court over the nomination of his National Resistance Movement-NRM party rival, Andrew Ojok Oulanyah.
Through his lawyers of Elau & Ochom Advocates and legal consultants at the Gulu High Court on Monday, Kizza contends in his petition that the Electoral Commission’s decision to nominate Ojok is in total violation of the Parliamentary act 2002.
This comes just days after the Electoral Commission upheld Ojok’s nomination after Kizza petitioned the commission to disqualify him arguing that his nomination was illegal and irregular.
Kizza spoke to journalists on Tuesday morning in Gulu City and said that the person nominated by the Electoral Commission as Andrew Ojok Oulanyah doesn’t match the academic documents provided for nomination.
He further argued that whereas the candidate was nominated as Ojok Andrew Oulanyah, his A-level academic document indicates Ojok Andrew O.
He has served the high court in Gulu and wants the matter to be expeditiously handled within the next two days.
Kizza wants the court to denominate Ojok from the Omoro County Parliamentary by-election and ordered both the commission and Ojok to pay him the costs of the suit.
According to Maj Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu the Alliance for National Transformation-ANT Party President, all candidates must be equal in the race, and such irregularities shouldn’t be accepted before the law.
He notes that the NRM candidate should have done a deed poll to rectify his name arguing that he did the same while contesting the 2021 Presidential election.
However, Paul Bukenya the Electoral Commission Spokesperson says they will respond swiftly to the petition once they are served.
