Opposition bigwig Dr. Kizza Besigye has been sent back to jail at Luzira on fresh charges of inciting violence. The former president Forum for Democratic Change(FDC)appeared before the Buganda Road Magistrates Court where he was slapped with charges of inciting violence.before being thrown into jail.
He was detained alongside former Rubaga South Constituency Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Lubega Mukaku.
Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza read the charges to the accused before remanding them up toJune 18th, 2022 when they apply for bail.The duo was netted by police and military on Tuesday this week after they made their way to downtown Kampala to protest high commodity prices
They also protested the National budget reading for the 2022/2023 FY at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on grounds that it was a waste of taxpayer’s money.
The duo was first detained at Kampala Central Police Station but later transferred to Nagalama Police Station in Mukono District on Tuesday. Court declined to grant bail to the accused who were arraigned in Court at exactly 6pm on Wednesday because it was too late .
Their lawyers led by Erias Lukwago and Samuel Muyizzi say they are hopeful that their clients will be granted bail on Friday.
The Court has heard that on June 14th, 2022 at Kikuubo in Shauriyako Parish in Kampala City, Besigye and Mukaku without lawful excuse made statements indicating that it would be desirable to demonstrate, which could cause violence and damage to property.
The leader of pressure group People's Front for Transition recently launched another campaign dubbed "State of crisis in Uganda" shortly after he was granted bail from Luzira Prison.
The latest campaign is aimed at portraying the government’s thoughtless spending in the face of increasing inflation
It is not the first time that Besigye is being locked up on charges of inciting violence for protesting skyrocketing prices .
On May 24th 2022, he was charged over the same charges by Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha who asked him to pay bail of 30 million shillings cash which was later reduced to 3 million shillings by the High Court .
He was thrown into jail following another protest at Arua Park where he was addressing crowds over hiked prices.
Besigye was later released on Monday last week from the same Prison which he has gone back to.
