Police in North Kyoga have confirmed that 16 people died on Friday morning after a bus they were traveling in rammed into a stationary trailer at Adebe trading center near corner Kamdin, along the Kampala-Gulu highway.
The incident happened at Midnight on Friday as Robyn company bus traveling from Kampala to Gulu had a head-on collision with a stationary trailer registration number UAZ 381A/UBD 318C.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga police spokesperson confirmed that twelve people died on the spot while four others succumbed to injuries at Atapara hospital where they were rushed for treatment.
Okema says police are yet to confirm the identities of the deceased whose bodies currently lie at Anyeke Health Center IV pending a postmortem.
According to Okema, preliminary findings indicate that the trailer had parked wrongly on the road without warning. He however says investigations are underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
On Tuesday this week, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety released a report showing that 104 crashes happened between December 30 and January 01, 2023.
The report indicates that most accidents are caused by reckless driving and overspeeding
