At least 21 people have been killed and 49 injured in a tragic road accident in Lwakhakha, just across the border from Uganda. The majority of those affected are believed to be Ugandan nationals.
District police commander Patrict Kitau has stated that the crash occurred on Saturday evening, around 8pm, in Lwakhakha, approximately 3 kilometers from the Uganda-Kenya border.
The accident involved a bus belonging to the Nairobi Bus Company, with registration number KCL 850M, which was traveling from Mbale to Nairobi. The bus reportedly veered off the road and overturned several times.
The bodies of the victims have been transported to the Chepteyis and Lwandanyi hospital mortuaries, where they are awaiting identification by their relatives. Those who were injured in the accident are receiving treatment at the same hospitals.
An eyewitness to the accident has stated that the bus was moving at a high speed and failed to negotiate a small corner, resulting in it veering off the road.
It is also believed that the driver of the bus was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
