President Museveni has granted approval for the retirement of former Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, from active service in the army.
This decision was announced by army spokesperson Brig Felix Kuayigye in a statement on Monday afternoon, confirming that a total of 110 officers and senior officers from the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) will be retiring.
Gen Kayihura's retirement signifies the dropping of charges against him in the army court, and he is among the 11 generals scheduled to retire from the army in the coming month.
During the 2021 general election campaigns, leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Kisoro district had requested President Museveni to pardon Gen Kayihura so that he could be redeployed. The president had expressed his intention to address this request.
Notably, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the First Son, had also appealed to President Museveni to pardon Gen Kayihura and facilitate his "rehabilitation." The pardon has arrived in a timely manner, as the respected bush war general is now included in the batch of military personnel set to retire from active service in the UPDF in August.
Other notable individuals in this retirement group include Maj Gen Sam Wasswa Mutesasira, Maj Gen Arocha Joseph, Brig Steven Oluka, Brig Augustine Atwooki, and several others.
