Police has this morning foiled a coup at Uganda peoples’ congress in Kampala.
UPC is one of the oldest political parties in Uganda, and this morning, police were called in to block a meeting by the National Council of the Otunnu faction, leaving more than 50 party leaders stranded.
The leaders gathered from different parts f the country were today expected to discuss the numerous problems facing the party, and mount a coup on the party currently under the leadership of Hon. Jimmy Akena.
The otunnu faction says the party faces problems ranging from leadership wrangles, bickering among party members and financial hardships.
But, Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango says the Jimmy Akena faction contacted them about Otunnu’s planned takeover and they swung into action to protect the party constitution.
“There is no court order to that effect that he should come and take over leadership, and according to the information and writings we have, its hon. Akena who is the party president. As police, we have a mandate to protect the constitution of UPC, and as usual, we don’t discriminate our services, we offer them to any party that comes to us,” Said Onyango.
He added; “We are providing UPC leadership with security to see that Dr. Otunnu does not overthrow the leadership of Hon. Akena unconstitutionally.”
Olara Otunnu describes all this as illegal adding that such action is embarrassing to the police force.
