President Museveni has received a resolution to amend Article 102 of Constitution from Kyankwanzi NRM leadership.
Article 102 (b) of the Uganda constitution states that a person, less than 35 years and more than 75 years of age, is not qualified for election as president.
The president received it yesterday and promised to study it with the party members.
The resolution seeks to have presidential age limit lifted to have him rule the country until he decides to step down.
Appearing on NBS TV this morning, Don Wanyama, the presidential press secretary said; “As he left Kyankwanzi yesterday, Museveni was handed the age limit removal petition, received it but didn't comment.”
Wanyama, like government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo also insisted the Kyankwanzi retreat had nothing to do with removal of age limit.
He also explained that there is nothing criminal or illegal about people calling for an amendment. “Law is not cast in stone.”
The development follows a series of discussions indicating that the ruling NRM party is harboring a plan to lift age limits and let their chairman rule forever.
If parliament amends the constitution, President Museveni - currently 71 years - will be able vie again for the country’s top seat in 2021 up to 2026.
The Kyankwanzi NRM district conference early last month passed the resolution to lift the presidential age limit from the current 75 years to an unlimited age.
Anne Maria Nakabirwa, the Kyankwanzi district NRM chairperson, said leaders in the district want the presidential candidate age limit requirement lifted.
