A delegation from the Uganda police force has been kicked out of Parliament by the defense and Internal affairs committee after they appeared without their boss, Gen. Kale Kayihura.
The Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura had been expected to appear before the now furious MPs today to answer queries on continued police brutality but did not show.
The IGP was supposed to appear before the committee alongside officials from the Uganda Prisons and those from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
However, the committee chaired by Mityana District Woman MP and former police spokesperson Hon Judith Nabakooba, was later handed a letter indicating that Gen. Kayihura had today travelled to meet the Kenyan IGP Joseph Boinett and was unable to make it to the committee meeting.
Enraged legislators who were ready to grill him could not hide their anger and took it upon a delegation of police officers who had represented him asking them to show proof that Kayihura has indeed travelled to Kenya.
The members were expected to grill Gen Kayihura on the question of police brutality on supporters of former presidential candidate Col Dr Besigye.
Hon Muwanga Kivumbi a committee member says it was time for the Parliament to show its might to the police boss and they have decided never to meet the police delegation unless Kayihura is present.
“We shall never meet the Police force again without the IGP,” said a furious Kivumbi.
The committee Chairperson Hon. Nabakooba told the press, that the IGP was absent against the members’ will and did not inform them on time.
