The opposition Democratic Party, DP has conceded defeat in the just concluded elections in Omoro district.
The party’s candidate Grace Lanyero was defeated in the Omoro district woman MP race by ruling NRM party candidate Lamwaka Catherine.
Kenneth Paul Kakaned, the party spokesperson says they have accepted the people’s decision.
Addressing the press in Kampala, Kakande said the party had fielded the best candidate in Omoro, but the natives had decided otherwise. He explains that Lanyero was the most qualified candidate to represent the district in parliament.
NRM’s Catherine Lamwaka polled 10,958 votes to take the seat, FDC’s Prossy Alanyo came second with 3,948 while DP’s Lanyero came third with 1,345 votes.
“The Democratic party has conceded defeat in the elections of member of parliament for woman representative of Omoro district. We are the Democratic Party! The people of Omoro have decided. And as a party, we respect their decision” Kakande said.
He added that “despite some irregularities, and the heavy police deployment and the connection of Lamwaka to the military, we still respect the people’s decision.”
Yesterday’s elections saw DP president Norbert Mao vote for the first time since 2011 and at the venue, he was optimistic that DP would win this election.
