President Yoweri Museveni is today expected to hold a meeting with the political and technical wings of the Kampala capital city authority to resolve the impasse in the city.
The development comes at a time when the two parties have failed to agree on how to treat vendors who have poured on the streets and taxi parks, preventing customers from accessing shops in the central business district.
The political wing is made up of the Lord Mayor and city councilors, while the technical wing includes the Executive Director Jennifer Musisi and her team, as well as the minister for Kampala Betty Kamya and her team.
However, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has vowed not to step in the meeting slated to take place at state house Entebbe claiming he is doing everything in his authority to resolve the issue that has pit KACITA against vendors.
Minister Kamya recently issued a directive to KCCA enforcement officers and police to evict all vendors from the streets, an exercise that began on Monday, the same day the Lord Mayor chaired a council meeting which resolved to allocate some city streets to these vendors.
Since the two parties have failed to agree, the president invited them to his office to see if they can workout a common plan.
It is to be remembered that vendors claim that Museveni allowed them to ply their business on the streets during the 2016 electoral campaigns.
Lord Mayor Lukwago also accuses Betty Kamya of ignoring their invite to the Monday meeting where he expected them to come to a compromise. However, Kamya too blames Lukwago of ignoring her calls to meet over the same issue in the past.
Currently, police is still deployed in the city to help KCCA enforcement officers who are facing resistance from vendors during the eviction exercise. On Monday and yesterday police had to fire bullets to scare away the rowdy vendors who beat up enforcement officers during the bloody eviction.
