The outgoing chairman of the electoral commission Eng. Dr. Badru Kiggundu has revealed that never at any point has he been threatened by the ruling NRM party or president.
Dr. Kiggundu was answering questions from the media during his final press briefing as the EC chairman this morning at Imperial royale hotel in Kampala.
The outgoing EC chair explained that by doing his job as per the constitution, he never run into any trouble or any threats by the winning president, political party, or even the opposition.
“Have I been threatened by a winning candidate at any moment in time? Why? If I have been doing my work obliging to the provisions of the laws which were handed down to me, I have not been threatened at all. I know the public may have wanted to see that, but I am afraid I am going to leave without a threat being witnessed” he explained.
Kiggundu also maintained he does not belong to any political party, but will choose where to belong, once he hands over office.
Dr. Kiggundu and his commissioners’ term of office at the EC ends Thursday 17th Nov 2016. He was appointed the EC chairperson in 2002. He served the terms from 2002-2009 and 2009-2016.
In his first term, 2002-2009, Kiggundu served with Sr. Margaret Magoba as the deputy Chairperson, and commissioners; Mr. Joseph Biribonwa, Dr. Okelo Jenny, Mr. Buruku Tom, Amb. Dr. Tomasi Sisye Kiryapawo and Mr. Ongaria D. Steven.
In his second term from 2009-2016, Kiggundu served with Mr. Joseph Biribonwa as the deputy chairman, and commissioners; Dr. Okello Jenny, Mr. Buruku Tom, Amb. Dr. Tomasi Sisye Kiryapawo and Mrs. Justine A. Mugabi.
The secretary to the commission for the above period and head of the EC Secretariat has been dedicated to Mr. Sam Rwakoojo.
