As the electoral commission moves to close nomination exercise for Member of Parliament aspirants, the ruling National Resistance Movement, NRM Party is rocked in a scandal after the election of Aine Godfrey Kaguta Sodo was overturned.
While appearing on a local TV station last night, Emmanuel Dombo the director for information and publicity said the party’s Central Executive Committee, CEC was to sit and decide what happens next.
Dombo even hinted on a fresh election. “The CEC can sit any moment even in the morning and declare that a re-run happens. The people can vote and whoever wins is nominated before 5pm” Dombo said.
The race between Sodo and Shartis Musherure was a bloody one, leaving some people hospitalized. Even before Sodo was declared winner Shartis had petitioned the NRM chairperson electoral commission Prof. Odoi Tanga seeking a re-run, claiming that their votes were annulled at 6 polling stations and given zero vote.
It remains unclear what took them so long to make a decision about the most violent constituency. Today is the final nomination day for Member of Parliament aspirants and the exercise will close at 5PM.
