Muhereza Kyamutetera who was the chairman organizing committee of the Save Carol campaign has spoken to Carol’s Mother and here are some of the facts that he collected from her:

1. Around October last year, Carol in a conversation with Dr.Chad Zender, one of the visiting cancer specialists from the Cleveland Ohio, who has also worked on her before, received an estimate of $80,000 (Shs270,000,000) for treating her at the University Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio. On the basis of that communication, a #SaveCarol campaign was started to raise the required amount. Subsequently, Shs324, 603,399 was raised for this purpose.

2. On Tuesday 3rd May, 2016 in a meeting with Carol’s family and after extensive reviews by both UCI & the same visiting medical team from the US, the family was told that due to the delicate situation that Carol’s health had gone into, she would be unable to safely fly to the US. The doctors from the US recommended a fresh drug that would have to be purchased from the US- to be administered either here or in Nairobi.

3. On Wednesday May 4th 2016, the #SaveCarol campaign officially closed, although this had nothing to do with the communication received from the doctors on Carol’s new position- as the service and the decision to close the campaign had been scheduled more than a week earlier.

4. Following the new communication, the family has been engaging UCI for other alternatives and following another meeting today May 10th with UCI- it has been agreed that Carol’s case be referred to Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi for further attention. The family is still waiting for the referral papers and once ready, Carol should be flown to Nairobi for further attention.

5. We are still hopeful that Carol can be stabilized and be able to fly for further and more advanced treatment. Lastly, we ask you to keep Carol in your prayers as we seek all other alternative possibilities.
