At least 30 people have lost drowned following a boat accident on Lake Albert that happened around 9 pm on Tuesday night.

At least 30 people have lost drowned following a boat accident on Lake Albert that happened around 9 pm on Tuesday night.

According to police reports, the deceased are businessmen from Runga Landing site in Hoima district who were heading to Panyimur fish Market in Pakwach district.

They are feared to have died when their boat capsized near Songa Lendu Landing site in Buliisa district. Ashraf Oromo, the Runga landing site Defense Secretary says there were 47 people aboard the boat when it capsized. 

According to Oromo, the boat left Runga Landing site on Tuesday afternoon safely, only for them to getting shocking news that it had capsized. 12 people have been rescued by fishermen while 8 bodies had also been retrieved from the lake by police and fishermen by press time.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region police spokesperson says marine police has joined local fishermen to search for the bodies of the missing businessmen. However, the retrieved bodies are still lying at Songalendu landing site as police make arrangements to transport them to Buliisa Hospital mortuary for postmortem. 

The identities of both the deceased and rescued persons were not readily available.
