Uganda Peoples Defense Forces-UPDF are searching for their own soldier who shot and injured a civilian.

The suspect, who has only been identified as private Oluka is attached to the UPDF Artillery division headquarters in Masindi district.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson explains that that while enforcing curfew regulation around 10:30 pm on Saturday night, private Oluka shot and critically injured 45-year-old Stephen Tumwesigye, a resident of Nyangahya cell in Masindi Central division in Masindi Municipality in the leg.

According to Hakiza, as Oluka, other UPDF and police officers were enforcing curfew, they met Tumwesigye at night and tasked him to explain why he was moving past curfew time. Tumwesigye abused the officers prompting Oluka to shoot him in the leg.

The victim was first rushed to Kitara medical center in Masindi town for treatment before he was transferred to Bombo military hospital for specialized treatment.

Oluka has since gone into hiding together with his gun and is currently being hunted by both police and the UPDF.
