Musician Mesach Semakula is grateful that his music, and that of his contemporaries, is now played in Kampala's top clubs.
The singer explained that, years ago, band music was neglected and often labeled "village music." He says that's no longer the case, as even Kampala's most stylish residents now enjoy it.
"Those who used to say my music was meant for the villages are now the ones enjoying it," he explained in a local television interview. "I was at Silo recently, and the young men and women were singing along, word for word. I was surprised, but also delighted."
Semakula believes band music is high-quality and contains a packaged message. He says that, in the past, they never focused on creating "hits," but rather on making good music.
"We were creating good music, and we didn't care about hits like artists do today," he explained. "Our music will continue to live on for a long time."
Mesach Semakula believes that timeless music is the way to go, and that artists should focus on delivering a meaningful message while in the studio.
